At the Graduate School of Information Sciences, researching information that is produced by individual areas of study such as humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and view them through an interdisciplinary standpoint. In addition, the Graduate School of Information Sciences aims to further develop information science and open up new areas of research to foster superior human resources to lead a new epoch of human technological interaction. Within the School of Information Sciences, there are five research areas and three cooperating laboratories from the Division of Mechanical Engineering that belong to the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, System Information Sciences, and Applied Information Sciences. Because of this collaboration, promotion of research to integrate mechanical engineering with information sciences such as the thermal fluid simulation, high-performance and low power consumption computer architecture, computer vision, visual serving, rescue robot and other multidisciplinary projects can be undertaken. Postgraduate education within the department is promoted and works closely with the Division of Mechanical Engineering that belongs to the Graduate School of Engineering. The laboratory of the Division of Mechanical Engineering also belongs to this graduate school. Cultivating human resources who will excel in not only mechanical engineering, but also information sciences is the aim of the department.
