History of the Division of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

1907

Founding of Tohoku Imperial University

1912

Sendai Technical High School reorganized to Tohoku Imperial University, Department of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering and three other departments).

1919

Establishment of School of Engineering and Division of Mechanical Engineering.

1939

Establishment of Department of Aeronautics.

1944

Establishment of Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering.

1945

Department of Aeronautics abolished, and Department of Industrial Dynamics established.

1947

Tohoku Imperial University renamed Tohoku University.

1949

Under the post-war Educational Reform, Second High School, Sendai Technical College, Miyagi Teacher’s School, Miyagi Youth Teacher’s School and Miyagi Women’s College were merged into Tohoku University. (establishment of School of Engineering under new reforms).

1950
  • Department of Industrial Dynamics renamed Department of Precision Engineering.
  • Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering renamed Department of Mineral Engineering, later to become Department of Geoengineering.
1953

Graduate School of Engineering established.

1961

Establishment of Second Department of Mechanical Engineering, to which one laboratory from Department of Mechanical Engineering was transferred.

1962

Establishment of department nuclear engineering, later to be changed energy engineering.

1964

Establishment of Institute of Material Strength Research, later to become Research Institute of Fracture Mechanics, then Research Institute of Fracture Control Systems.

1965

The Building for three departments of Mechanical Engineering was completed in Aobayama campus, and the departments transferred from Katahira Campus.

1966

Department of Mineral Engineering renamed Department of Resource Engineering.

1991

Three departments of Mechanical Engineering reorganized as Mechanical Engineering and Intelligent Systems, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, and Mechanical Aeronautic Engineering.

1993

Graduate School of Information Sciences established (five laboratories transferred from three departments of Mechanical Engineering).

1995

Three departments emphasized and reorganized on the graduate level: Mechanical Engineering and Intelligent Systems, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering.

1996

Departments emphasized and reorganized on the graduate level: Nuclear Engineering changed to Nuclear Energy Engineering, Department of Resource Engineering changed to Geoengineering.

2002

Department of Management Science and Technology established (two laboratories transferred from three departments of Mechanical Engineering).

2003
  • Department of Bioengineering and Robot System established (seven laboratories transferred from three departments of Mechanical Engineering).
  • Graduate School of Environmental Studies established (all departments of Geoengineering, and one laboratory transferred from three departments of the Division of Mechanical Engineering).
2004
  • Tohoku University reclassified as a National University Corporation.
  • Three departments of Mechanical Engineering reorganized as Mechanical Systems and Design, Nanomechanics and Aerospace Engineering.
  • Three courses of the Division of Mechanical Engineering, along with Department of Quantum Engineering, and Geoengineering reorganized as Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; implemented as six courses; Mechanical Systems and Design; Nanomechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Quantum Science and Energy Engineering, Bioengineering and Robot Systems, and Environment and Energy Engineering.
  • Fracture Research Institute renamed Gracture and Reliability Research Institute.
2006

Micro/Nano-Machining Research and Education Center established.

2008

Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering established (instructors transferred from Department of Bioengineering and Robotics, new lectures created).

2010

International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course (IMAC) established.

2016
  • Department of Mechanical Systems and Design reorganized into Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering.
  • Department of Nanomechanics reorganized into Department of Finemechanics.
  • Department of Bioengineering and Robot Systems reorganized into Department of Robotics.
  • Eight undergraduate courses implemented as Mechanical Systems, Finemechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Quantum Science and Energy Engineering, Robotics, Environment and Energy Engineering, Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering and International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course.
2017

Introduction of entrance examination for fall enrollment of prospective Japanese students (the first in the Faculty of Science and Engineering).
